This year to celebrate George Washington's Birthday, send out a few free e-cards to friends and family alike, to show your appreciation. Free e-cards are gradually taking over the card market, and there are a few main reasons for this.

These reasons are firstly that e-cards are eco friendly, for a normal card loads a tree has to be cut down to make it. Secondly, e-cards can be sent around the globe, and they'll arrive almost instantly. So you could be in the U.S.A, and then could send a card to the UK, and it would arrive within seconds. And then the last reason, they are free.

George Washington is a legendary hero in the scrolls of American history. Born into an upper class Virginia family, he received an education befitting a young man of his breeding, and worked as a surveyor of unimproved land before being commissioned as a lieutenant in the French and Indian War in 1754.

Between 1759 and the start of Revolutionary War, Washington served in Virginia's House of Burgesses and tended to his property at Mt. Vernon.

As many landowners of that time, Washington grew more and more outraged by the limitations placed upon Americans by Great Britain, so when the Second Continental Congress convened in May of 1775, he accepted the position of Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, to which he was there elected.

After guiding the meager American army to victory after six long years of fighting, General Washington continued to work on setting up the framework of a functional independent government for the United States. The Constitutional Convention, which ratified the new Constitution, also elected George Washington to be the first President of the newborn nation in 1789.

Though the Constitution outlined Presidential and other government responsibilities only vaguely, Washington enacted the leadership role that he felt was described in the document.

Not a believer in partisan politics, he did not interfere with nor greatly influence the legislative duties of Congress. However, the decisions that affected the United States' relations with the rest of the world fell on his shoulders as Congress found itself preoccupied with domestic issues.

Much to Washington's chagrin, party politics began to divide the country, Congress, and the political process by the end of his first term as President and in spite of his wishes to the contrary, the American partisan system has never waned.

Washington served a second term, upon the conclusion of which he gladly retired, leaving his involvement in the shaping of the United States an example of integrity and honor for all subsequent Presidents to follow.

Though George Washington is one of the most prominent figures in American history, there is always more to learn about this fascinating character, his accomplishments, and contributions. Recognize his legacy by reading up on his life, presidency, writings, and beliefs.

More and more free e-cards are been sent out each year. They come in many different categories, and styles so there is sure to be something for you.
