A door closer is a mechanical device that slowly closes a door after someone opens it. Probably the most important use of door closers are in fire escape doors, as they help prevent spread of the fire and smoke in case of a fire.

It is also useful in commercial establishments and high-traffic locations for purposes as varied as climate control, safety and security. If you do not have a door closer in your shop, some customer might walk right in without closing the door. Door closers are also useful in a residential setting as kids can walk in or out the door without closing it. Leaving the door open can let the bugs in the house.

Even when an office building is secure from unauthorized access, there are often indoor rooms that need to be locked or securely shut. For example, storage closets, record rooms, duplicating and copy rooms, and computer server rooms in offices need to be secured. The reasons for having a door closed in the office are as varied as climate control, as in the case of a computer server system, for safety, to avoid having open doors blocking a hallway, or for security keeping people out of storage or record rooms.

Choosing a door closer can involve the consideration of a variety of criteria. In addition to the closer's performance, other criteria may include resistance to opening forces (for use by disabled or infirm) as well as health, safety, durability, risk of vandalism/ligature and aesthetics.

The most popular brands of door closers are LCN, Cal-Royal and Norton, all of which allow you to choose the specifications needed to manage the traffic of the door that you are controlling. It is important that you consider the amount of anticipated traffic expected for the door in choosing a door closer.

There are two different grades on door closers as to how much traffic they are designed to endure before needing replacement. If you need a door closer to endure high traffic areas like commercial estatblishments, then you should choose Grade 1 door closers. They are typically used for main entrances of most businesses. Grade 1 door closers are designed to function up to 400 times a day and last from three to seven years before needing replacement.

There is also Grade 2 door closer for medium traffic in a commercial application. It is recommended that you use Grade 2 door closer on an interior door of an office area that is used up to 100 times a day. You should note that Grade 2 closers do not come with backcheck control, which slows the door down from opening too fast and/or hitting against a stop or wall. Therefore, Grade 2 door closers should be used strictly for interior of a commercial establishment only.

When purchasing a door closer, it is important to buy a sizable closer, which allows you the opportunity to adjust the power of the unit. A sizeable closer allows you to control the door with less speed.
