Since the 1980s, mobile phones has changed from an costly item used by business types to a very popular communications device that is used by much of the population. in actual fact, these days, mobile telephone outnumber land line phones in numerous countries.

Forget about alexandra graeme bell. On 3rd april 1973, dr martin cooper, a motorola employee, placed a call to rival Joel Engel, who was head of research at AT&T's Bell Labs. doctor Martin made the phone call while he was walking the streets of new york city and did so through the first Motorola DynaTAC prototype in front of reporters. motorola has a long history of making radios for vehicles, particularly two way radios for taxis and police cars. however, recognisable mobile phones with direct dialing have existed since the fifties at least.

The very earliest mobile telephones were named first generation telephones, also called 1-g. The 1-g era lasted from the late 1970s through to the 1980s. these items were the first genuine mobile telephones, although they were then called cellular mobile radio telephones, & were based on analogue signals. the use of an analogue signal was the difference between these first generation mobile telephones & their second generation cousins, which emerged a few years later.

Second generation, also known as 2-g, mobile phones were introduced in the 1990s. 2-g telephone systems were different because of their use of digital transmission and the introduction of advanced and quick telephone to network signals.

The entrance of 2-g systems saw phones move from friendly 1g phones to little handheld devices, which were much more portable. this change was made possible through improvements in technology for instance more advanced batteries and energy efficient electronics.

The second generation mobile phones had severaladvantages over 1g devices. These included text messaging, which became possible on gsm networks initially and eventually on most digital networks. the first machine-sent message was sent in the uk in 1991. the first person-to-person text message was sent in 1993 in finland. sms messaging soon became the preferred method of communication and the general public now prefer sending text messages to making voice calls.

The earliest pre commercial 3-g mobile phone network was launched in japan in may 2001. later, 3-g was commercially released in Japan on 1 october 2001.

3-g is the third generation of mobile phone standards & technology, which succeeded 2-g mobile technology. the arrival of 3g technologies enabled network operators including orange to offer their users a larger range of more advanced services. This includes broadband wireless internet, in addition to high tech video calls.

Despite the success of 3-g, there has also been lots of complaints about it. These include criticism over the cost of 3-g phones, a lack of network coverage because it's still a relatively new service & the amount of power that 3g phones use.

Since the launch of 3g mobile telephone technology. people have been discussing 4g. 4g technology will mark the future of mobile telephones, creating the most developed handsets and perfectservices to date. in fact, one of the next services to be developed is thought to be live streaming of tv & radio shows to 3-g handsets is and shops including real and disney recently announcing that they'll be offering these services.

Ultimately, even though the history of mobile phones they've come a long way in the last few years, it also shows that they'll go even further still.
