Several industries have added to Leeds' finances, but the city is especially renowned for its clothes trade. There are some renowned names associated with the city, comprising of Thomas Chippendale who began building his renowned furniture there, and Michael Marks - of marks & spencers - who started his earliest Penny Bazaar there in 1884.
As well as this, it is also home to the big Kirkgate Market. The market is Europe’s 2nd biggest indoor market after Leicester and is open 6 days a week. There are over 400 stalls inside the market and a further two hundred outside. It attracts over 100 thousand visitors a week.
Kirkgate Market first started in 1822 as an open air market and the earliest covered bits were built between 1850 and 1875. Unfortunately, most of the building, except the Vicar Lane facade, was ruined in a 1975 fire. inspite of the cost, the Market was refurbished in the early 1990s and following this, Kirkgate Market was upgraded from a Grade II to a Grade I listed building.
Regularly known as the ‘Knightsbridge of the North’, Leeds is a wonderful location for shoppers! It boasts over 1,000 shops, which include Harvey Nicholls, Louis Vuitton and more, scattered around its stylish high streets, state-of-the-art malls, Victorian shopping arcades, historic buildings & edwardian markets.
