Sheffield is a city in yorkshire, britain. it was given its name because the city originated in a field on the River Sheaf. the city's popular was estimated to be 525,800 in 2006, & the city is one of the eight biggest british cities outside London.
It's historically known as an industrial city, which is famous for manufacturing steel. The city's steel manufacturing heritage was shown in a 1997 british movie, The Full Monty.
By the fourteenth century, Sheffield was already famed for the production of knives, & by 1600 it was at the heart of cutlery production in the uk. These industries led to sheffield's rapid growth, which saw the town made a borough in 1843 & being given city status in 1893.
Sheffield stayed a major industrial city throughout the first half of the 20th century, although competition from other countries led to the closing of various steelworks from the beginning of the 1970s.
