Electrical power industry is using current transformers in metering, protective relaying.

It eases the flow of huge amount of currents, in the presence of high voltages in the circuit in a consistent manner.

Current Transformers works on the principle of flow of current in the secondary circuit which is perpendicular to the volume of current flowing in its primary circuit. It is primarily a device to measure the current and check the functioning of power grid.

Use of current transformer is such that it cut offs securely to measure and manage a circuitry from the high voltage available on the circuit. You can control the current transformer by passing a single primary turn under a well-insulated toroidal core with great amount of turns of wire wrapped. Current transformer also can be used to accurately measure the flow of current and identify, monitor the operation power usage. The current transformer is basically defined by its value of current ratio flowing from primary to secondary circuit.

Factors which affect (improve) the accuracy of current transfers are burden, physical current transformer configuration, rating factor etc.

Intermediate conductors are reasons for burden in the current calculation circuit and also switch block meters and some of the sources are the conductors among the meter and the current transformer. Outcome for the burden in the current transformer circuit is basically the value of impendence. Presence of high resistance is due to the substation meter being at a level of distance from meter that could beat by using current transformer with 1 amp which produce low voltage drop.

To ascertain the correct maximum measurable primary current, rating factor of current transformer which are dependent on ambient temperature is used. Usually by multiplying the full load of the current transformer. Rating factor of the current transformer ranges from 35 degree to 55 degree Celsius and to maintain accuracy level with rise of ambient temperature the current transformer would have a low capacity.

The accuracy of the current transformer is also affected by the physical current transformer configuration. Inaccuracy occurs in a current transformer due to the conductors being not centered in circular or oval.

In normal conditions, the current transformer is produced in several ways like passing a single primary turn by way of well-insulated toroidal core wrapped with many turns of wire.

Wideband current transformers are specifically utilized to measure the waveforms of high frequency or pulsed currents within high-pulsed power systems.
