Yeast infections are caused by the extra growth of certain yeast organisms that normally live within a woman's reproductive organ. The extra growth can be caused by a variety of factors, such as taking antibiotics or birth control pills, wearing damp underwear, tight pants, a poor diet, or use of certain products. Yeast infections can be especially itchy, crusty, and smelly. They are usually treated with vaginal creams or suppositories such as Monistat, Gynecure or Canesten, which can be purchased at a drug store without a prescription. If these drug treatments do not work, you may need to see a doctor for prescription creams or pills.

Yeast infections are common and sometimes difficult to treat, but with an appropriate evaluation and treatment, they can be effectively cured. Any symptomatic discharge should be evaluated to ensure that you are getting the proper treatment. Yeast infections are also known as candidiasis. Around 90 percent of women suffer from yeast infections. However, small amounts of yeast are always present in the body.

The treatments for yeast infections are usually some kind of antifungal agent which comes in the form of a cream, tablets or suppositories that are inserted into the body with a special applicator. Always be sure to continue your medication for the specified time, even if your symptoms disappear. If you don't, the infection may reoccur. Yeast infections are not STDs, and health experts don't know for sure if they are transmitted sexually. About 12 to 15 percent of men get an itchy rash if they have unprotected sex with an infected woman.

Yeast infections are associated with a whitish-colored, and often clumpy discharge, wiht intense itching, inflammation and pain during urination as one's urine comes into contact with one's inflamed tissues. The culprit for most cases of vaginal yeast infections is Candida albicans, although other species of Candida can also cause an infection. Yeast infections are very common and a majority of women, around 70% of them, will get a yeast infection at least once during their lifetimes. Some of these women will get recurring yeast infections.

Yeast infections are not constrained to women; men can also get them. The infection may be caused by birth control pills, a weak immune system which allows many disease causing organisms to take hold, immune restraining steroid medications, diabetes, as well as the consumption of surplus starches, sugar, chocolate or alcohol. Strangely enough though, yeast infections are caused by an organism that we all have living in our bodies. In a healthy body the Candida is kept under control by the immune system and the beneficial bacteria that live in the intestines and on the skin. Yeast infections are generally benign infections involving several body areas. The most common areas infected by the Candida yeast organism include the mouth, the intestines, the skin and the reproductive organs.
