Although many states in the United States do not allow for gay and lesbian marriages, there are several other countries in the world where gay and lesbians can get married or obtain civil unions.
Canada is one of the countries that allow lesbian women to get married. In fact, the reason that a lot of young couples are moving to Canada is because the country allows same sex marriages.
In December 2004, the Canadian Supreme Court ruled same sex marriages as constitutional. On June 28, 2005 the House of Commons voted to extend marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples throughout Canada. One of the reasons that a lot of young couples are moving to Canada to get married is because there is no residency requirement to legalize lesbian marriages in Canada. However, this does not mean that either the marriage or the civil union will be recognized by other countries.
Amsterdam has always prided itself on being liberal. For the past few years, gay women have been able to get married in the Netherlands. The Government recognized lesbian marriages as well as civil unions.
In 2003, Belgium became only the second country in the world that allowed young couples of the same sex to marry. The open spirit of the country also makes it a very popular destination for gay cruises and single woman vacations.
In 2005, Spain voted to legalize marriage of gay women and lesbians. In 2006, South Africa followed suit with a similar legislation.
