Hair loss in a man is somewhat different than that in women. In formal hair growth, approximately ninety percent of the hair on the scalp is in a continual state of growth. The remaining ten percent of hair on the scalp is in a phase of "resting" which tends to last two of three months. At the end of the resting phase, the resting hair is shed. As you grow older, your hair growth slows. This means that a certain amount of hair loss in a man (50 - 100 hairs a day) is fairly normal.

There are a variety of reasons that a person may experience this problem. A high fever or severe infection can cause it, as can thyroid disease, a lack of protein in the diet, alopecia areata, low serum iron, a fungal infection such as ringworm that is in the scalp and hair care or hair products that are not good for your hair and scalp. Certain medications, including cancer treatments and even major surgery or chronic illness can also cause you to lose it. Of course, as you probably already know, hereditary thinning and balding is a major culprit in a man.

So, if you have already begun to experience it, is there any hope for you? In some cases, yes. If you are concerned by what you feel is excessive hair loss or sudden, dramatic thinning of the hair, you should talk to your doctor or a dermatologist. They should be able to get to the root of the problem and recommend and available treatment. Sometimes, though, it is just the luck of the draw. Some men experience it and others do not.

There are a variety of treatments that are available. Not all people respond to the same treatments. If yours is due to a condition such as cancer treatment, then your hair will regrow naturally. However, there are some causes where there is currently no successful treatment. For some types, there are varieties of medication that is purported to encourage hair regrowth or hair replacement. Treatments such as Ministered (Propecia), which is available only by prescription, and Minoxidil (Rogaine), are two of the better known treatments with the best track records. Some men may opt for surgical hair replacement, but there are certain criteria that must first be met in order for you to be determined a candidate.

If you are suffering from balding problem, you are not alone. In fact, you are in very good company for many well known men have the same problem. Some try treatments, others opt for surgical hair replacement while others use toupees to cover the bald areas. Each of these is appropriate for that person and you have to find the remedy that is right for you. Of course, there is always that last group who go with it. They don't try to cover it or change, they just embrace the changes and accept that hair loss in a man is often completely natural. To many people, bald is beautiful!
