Find the Right Paper Folding Machine for Your Money

Looking for a paper folding machine to help create mailers, pamphlets and other folded documents? There are several factors that individuals and businesses should consider in order to pick the right paper folder for their individual needs. In order to be completely satisfied with the folding process, there are six factors to consider before making a purchase:
Budget – The best advice in this area is to buy the best paper folding machine that the budget will allow. Simply buying the cheapest folding machine on the market may not provide the right results. The MBM or Formax paper folders are the best options, if the budget allows. These manufacturers have very user-friendly designs, and they both have solid reputations. Just like a new car, it’s better to buy up than worry about poor quality later.

Fold Type – The type of fold one needs to create is another important consideration. A simple tri fold, half fold or z-fold will work with most folding machines. A cross fold or any other fold that is more complex will require a more high-end folding machine.

Folding Volume – Folding hundreds of thousands of documents per month will require a different type of folder than a mere 500 sheets per month. Most people fall somewhere between these numbers. It’s just important to remember the volume of paper that will need to be folded before purchasing a machine.

Paper Size – The paper size is perhaps the most important consideration before the purchase of a folding machine. This will narrow down one’s search for a paper folder considerably. In order to fold 11x17”, for example, a paper folder capable of letter-sized documents wouldn’t be adequate.

Paper Stock – The right type of paper for the job is another important consideration, as most lower-end folders on the market will have a difficult time folding any type of cardstock or index stock that is not pre-scored. Many of these paper folding machines will also have a difficult time with slick glossy paper stocks. Anyone who plans on folding these types of materials may want to consider sending in a sample to have tested before purchasing their folding machine.

Variety of Folds – The final consideration should be the number of different folds that will be needed. A lot of the lower-end paper folding machines are quite painstaking to set up, and they tend to change fold patterns. Any paper folding machine can do one simple fold, if that’s all that’s needed, but a print shop would obviously want the machine that is easier to use and easy to adjust for different folding varieties. Print shops should probably consider a paper folding machine with digital fold plate adjustments, or at least one with a fold plate fixed at 90 degrees to the paper path. Some of the lower-end folding machines, such as the Dynafold models, require users to square their fold plates during setup. This can be difficult for those who are constantly changing folding patterns, such as print shop employees.
