Choosing the right binding system can be difficult with thicker documents, which require more robust binding features. There are many different binding styles that are available for larger documents, including the following:
Plastic Comb Binding This binding style is able to process documents as thick as two inches with the use of oval shaped binding combs. The plastic combs are definitely the most affordable method of binding large sized documents. Special locks are included in the oval combs to prevent the pages from falling out, and they come in 12 different colors and many different sizes.
Screw Posts Binding a document that is larger than 3 can be difficult, but screw posts are always an option. Screw posts, or Chicago screws, come in lengths up to 4, and they can be extended with screw post extensions. They can be used for documents as thick as 5 or 6.
Spiral Coil The supplies for spiral coil binding come as thick as about 2 in diameter, but any of the spines that are larger than 1 can be very hard to work with. It is possible to use spiral coil for large book binding projects, but it requires a special process.
Thermal Binding Documents as thick as two inches can be bound with thermal binding covers. A binding machine like the Covermate 700 model can bind thick documents, but they need to have covers that are sized to the users exact document size. The covers must also be custom-made, which takes about two weeks. Companies that use one or two sizes of documents may find that thermal binding is a good option. Those who do a large quantity of sizes may find that the supplies can get pretty expensive, though.
Twin Loop Wire Binding spines with twin loop wire is best for spines of 1-1/4 thickness. There are some 1-1/2 twin loop wire binding spines now available, but they only come in black. Using any larger sized twin loop wire binding supplies requires a 2:1 pitch wire binding machine, though, and the binding machine should have a wire closer capable of handling 1-1/2 wires.
Unibind Unibind binding spines and covers come in thicknesses up to 36mm, which is approximately 1-1/2 thick, and they can process up to 340 sheets of 20lb paper. The size of the cover or spine must be matched to the size of the document, however, which requires various supplies to be on hand. Unibind allows users to purchase their supplies in smaller quantities, though, and they make them more readily available than thermal binding supplies.
Velobind GBC Velobind and SureBind are the only systems that can bind books as thick as three inches. The Velobind System 3 or SureBind System 3 can bind documents as small as one page or as large as 3 thick, and there are only three sizes of binding strips required. Velobind is great for binding large books, but it does not allow documents to lay flat and does not allow for easy editing.
There are many options when it comes to large binding systems, and this summary may not be enough to help make an informed decision. For more information, feel free to visit MyBinding.com or call one of their representatives.
