Salsa is a dance whose history is mainly based on contradiction and hearsay. Although many believe that this form of dancing originates from Cuba, most also agree that Puerto Rico is the home of salsa. This is a dance style of many influences and it is believed that the starting point of the salsa we know today was in the 1950s when another dance style started to modernize: mambo.
The Spanish term we use today to define this form of dancing, salsa, was first adopted in the 1970s and together with this name the cultural and linguistic barriers to adoption of this Latin dance were reduced.

A salsa congress or ‘congreso de salsa’ offers professional salsa dancers and amateurs the opportunity to celebrate this truly amazing dance. Since the year 1997 when the first salsa congress took place in Puerto Rico, there have been salsa festivals or congresos de salsa in almost all countries and in some countries, like Spain, you can go to such an event even once every week. Aside from the chance of enjoying salsa, these congresses also give people the chance to enter dance competitions, enjoy shows, live bands or social parties. Of course the key element is still salsa and there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a couple salsa. Her, with a silky, sparkly dress and salsa shoes or zapatos de salsa in Spanish and her partner moving around each other and constantly exchanging their places, not traveling around the dance floor but occupying a fixed area, dancing to a rapid beat and just taking your breath away.
A salsa congress usually lasts three days and, for those who are out of town, tickets include accommodation. A salsa ticket will ensure your entrance for all the duration of the salsa congress, hotel stay and meals. Each congress organiser in part decides how entrance and exit will be controlled. One thing is for sure, once you go to a salsa congress you will forever be in love with this dance.

Although it had a rough start and controversy has always surrounded this dance style, salsa has still managed to win the hearts of millions of people, and for connoisseurs there is no question why.
