Underarm laser hair removal is a process of removing the hair from the axillary area of the body with the aid of a laser that targets specific areas of the hair follicles and effectively kills the hair roots. This process is often referred to as hair epilation through the use of laser. It has been the most preferred type of laser hair removal in the recent decade because it is a permanent method. Epilating hair by the use of a laser or heat (as in electrolysis) is preferred for removing hair in the face and in the axillary areas.

Epilation Of Armpit Hair By The Use Of Laser Technology

Laser hair epilation has been an experimental process for over 20 years. It has only been established and recognized as an effective process of permanent hair removal during the last decade. The process of laser hair epilation is done by targeting the darker areas of the skin - the melanin containing cells. These cells often grow near hair follicles giving them their color. The laser damages these dark cells and in turn damaging the hair follicles themselves. This results in the negative growth of hair in those areas.

This process is often preferred for hair removal in certain areas like the lip, the armpit and on the back. However, the process is not effective in removing the fine downy hair ('peachfuzz') that covers the body. Electrolysis is often more effective on those instances.

Non-responders And Contraindications

The causes for having so-called 'Non-responders' to the laser epilation is unknown. It can be attributed to a lot of factors. One of them is that perhaps the patient has an underlying condition that prevents the effectiveness of the procedure. Another possible cause for ineffectiveness is the skill of the technician performing the procedure as well as the type and strength of the laser used in the process. This process is contraindicated or not advised for use in people who have recently acquired tans - this is because of the nature of the laser in targeting darkened areas of the skin. People with darker pigmentation are also contraindicated for a laser removal procedure.

Side Effects Of Laser Epilation

The side effects experienced by people who undergo the process of laser hair epilation differ. A common side effect is acne. This reaction is brought about by the skin's reaction towards the laser it has been exposed to. The case of acne is often mild especially when laser epilation is performed on much smaller areas like the armpits. Laser epilation can also cause a darkening of the skin, especially if the technician performing the procedure is inexperienced.
