Clear expectations of breast augmentation before and after surgery are necessary to having good results. Discussions with the surgeon should make it clear what will be needed from the patient both at the hospital and at home. Special garments and doctor visits will be necessary to achieving the desired look from the plastic surgery.

Mammaplasty And Implants

Augmentation mammaplasty is performed to increase the size of the chest. The procedure involves the insertion of implants either behind the pectoral muscle or behind the glandular tissue of the mammaries. Often done for cosmetic reasons, the technique can also be used for reconstruction in women who received mastectomies due to cancer, disease, or birth defects, and is sometimes done in men as pectoral implants.

Saline is sterile salt water inside a plastic pouch. The amount of saline will determine firmness and shape. If the plastic shell leaks, the pouch will deflate and the contents will be absorbed by the body safely. Their use is FDA approved for women 18 and older. Silicone is an elastic gel that mimics natural tissue within a similar shell. Implanting silicone requires regular checkups to check for leaks. The pouch most likely would not collapse because the gel often remains inside the implant pocket. Their use is FDA approved for women 22 and older. Younger usage may be approved for reconstructive purposes.

Preparing For The Procedure

It is important to prepare for the operation emotionally. Whether the reasons are cosmetic or medical, there will be a difference in the patient's body to which they will need to adjust. Consult with the surgeon about what to bring to the hospital and what to have ready at home. At least two compression garments and support bras will be necessary for the first six weeks. Have medication lists and schedules ready to make it easier to cope with the discomfort. Body or contour pillows will be beneficial for sleeping with a swollen chest. Special bathing replacements and cleansing cloths will help prevent infection and encourage healing. Also, finances should be arranged to pay for the operation in a manner that does not interfere with other bills and necessities.

Recovering From Plastic Surgery

The main outcome of the procedure should be immediately visible. Recovering from the operation will consist of soreness and swelling which may persist for several days. Reduced activity will be necessary, particularly refraining from exercise. A standard post-surgical hospital stay of 24-48 hours should be anticipated. Scarring along the incision line should fade over the course of the first year. Eventually the implants will need to be removed or replaced as they are not meant to be permanent. Planning ahead for this event and visiting the doctor regularly for check-ups will help keep the desired results of the breast augmentation before and after healing has completed.
