I have no idea when the adult movies business started. They say that prostitution is the world's oldest profession. I do not know if that means that the entertainment industry surrounding sex is also really old.
In fact, let me be honest, I do not even know when commercial movies of any type started. But I bet that adult movies would have taken birth around the same time. I find that in earlier centuries there were many regions of the world that were quite open about sexuality. It seems like the spread of the Britannia, the British Armada, spread Victorian values with it.
So, a country like India that once propagated the Kama Sutra also started despising sexuality and regarding it as a sin.
But whatever be the case, there are certainly many people who will agree with me when I say that there is more to this business of adult entertainment than what one sees currently.
Moving beyond the historical perspective, I would like to see where this entire industry of flesh and sleaze is going. The moment I refer to it as flesh and sleaze, it starts seeming like I am going to condemn it. But that is not the case. I am merely trying to use the terminology, adjectives, and metaphors that people have been attaching to the adult entertainment business over the past few decades.
Little surprise then that the mature movies business has had to hide behind some curtains. In fact the very expression I used right now, "mature movies," itself is some kind of a euphemism being used to camouflage the reality.
One interesting outcome of the fact that this industry hid behind the limelight was that the more organized and smarter players got the opportunity regroup and get their act together. They started operating as genuine business, obeying all regulations, and getting processes in place.
Lo and behold! Suddenly porn became an industry, with all the trappings of other conventional industries. In fact, I was watching a show on CNBC about the porn industry. Though the anchors were behaving as if they were dealing with an alien species, the fact remains that the show did air.
That by itself is a testament to the fact we have an industry going here.
If you are a customer of adult videos, you will probably demonstrate similar consumer characteristics as that of customers in any other consumer segment. You would probably have your favorite genre, your favorite performers, and your favorite studios. That is when you know that the business of porn has turned into a real industry.
