Rhinoplasty refers to plastic surgery that is carried out on a person's nose, when it is revisional it is usually because a client is not satisfied with the job. When people don't like the shape of their noses and want it altered then this is also sometimes called revisional rhinoplasty.

Not all surgery that is carried out on noses is for cosmetic reasons, or because earlier surgery didn't work or went wrong. People may need to have their noses rebuilt after they have had an accident or the nose might need straightening if it is bent or lumpy due to a break.

There are plenty of clinics and surgeries that offer plastic surgery nowadays and so this type of surgery has developed its own team of specialists. So now there are surgeons who deal with eyes and face lifts, those who deal with breasts and other parts of the body and those who deal with noses. Revisional rhinoplasty is not an exact science and most surgeons will admit that nose jobs can go wrong.

For example, it is not easy to get the cartilage grafts in the place that they should be when for one reason or another, the nose is out of shape. This was partly due to the technique which was in general use until recently and it was known as the open technique. This technique limited what the surgeon was able to do when he or she was rebuilding a nose.

Revisional Rhinoplasty has undergone a sea change since then and many surgeons are giving up the open technique and its limitations for the closed technique. This technique, which uses a small incision to remove cartilage from the ear or the septum is much more exact.

It is much easier to place the cartilage in the right place and there are some small incisions placed inside the nose in order to achieve this. The closed technique is much less intrusive than the previous open one which means that not only is it more exact; it is also much more comfortable for the patient once the operation is over.

This method of revisional rhinoplasty can be done under a local rather than a general anaesthetic, which means that there is much less blood loss than was previously the case. This makes the whole procedure easier for the surgeon and more comfortable for the patient. The patient can remain sitting upright during the operation which means that they and the doctor can discuss and agree just exactly where the grafts of cartilage should be placed.
