Poker is truly an attractive game. But poker is also addictive. It is quite common for a player to sit down and play poker all night. As the sunlight gradually peeps through the blinds, most players are bleary eyed and some are even asleep as they wait for the next deal. The attention level is distorted by fatigue. Many mistakes are made at this time because the optimal awareness has long since gone away. When this happens, you are at a disadvantage unless you have conditioned yourself to marathon play.
DO NOT BE A DISADVANTAGED POKER PLAYER
When you play poker, play to win. One of my favorite themes is, ''Winning beats losing." So play to win. Playing to win means to always try to position yourself to play with the best possible chance to beat whatever game you are in. If you play with the same bunch of guys every week or so in someone's home, you are probably not disadvantaged by the physical setting or being unfamiliar with the players.
It is quite a different story if you go somewhere and play in an unfamiliar game. This happens when you go to Vegas, California, Maryland, or wherever you have not played before. The setting is dramatically different, with different house rules, games and systems. The new setting requires you to expend energy just to adjust, which takes something away from the energy that should be devoted to your attention span and concentration on the game and players.
MAKING THE QUICK READ
On many occasions I have played in the card rooms in Nevada and California. Each and every time I sit down at the table in those settings, the demand to study each and every player is clear. I watch each and every hand that is turned over and mentally back up and replay the hand to get a clue as to how that particular player has responded. Has he called a raise with his starting hand? Has he raised? What was his position? Did he appear to know what other players would likely have? Is he a smart player? Does he start with a marginal hand?
These are just a few of the questions I ask myself as the game progresses. When you don't have a fix of any kind on any of the players, you try to accumulate information ASAP. This quest for knowledge requires energy and concentration that sometimes the well of my energy. There is only so much energy available for quality play within an eight-hour stretch. When that energy is expended, I will be at a disadvantage if other players have a better supply of energy. Program this energy drain into your computations regarding how long you should play in a particular game. Do not play beyond your limit. Don't play with and empty tank. It could very well cost you money.
