Tending to a backyard garden can take time and perseverance. The result can be well worth the effort. Embracing a practice that dates back over thirty seven thousand years, Americans spend an increasing amount on home gardens and landscaping. Choosing the right garden furniture accents can turn your garden into a showplace.

During the Paleolithic Era, early humans had learned the value of certain plants, fruits, and nuts as food sources. Though the practice of growing plants for food would take several eons to take root, it was inevitable that human would learn to grow and domesticate plants.

Throughout ancient times, people from every corner of the world were learning the value of plants. Though the cultivation of plants for food became a priority, ancient civilizations had also come to value the beauty found in plant life. From the Fertile Crescent in ancient Mesopotamia to the lush jungles of what is now South America, people were learning about the wonders of nature. Great gardens were developed in Asia, the Middle East with a growing emphasis on the cultivation of flowering plants.

As time progressed, gardens became popular with monarchs and commoners. Of course, the lower on the economic ladder one resided, the more likely it was that growing food took precedence over the cultivation of decorative plants. Even though most flowers cannot be eaten, their beauty was not lost on even the most common people.

The English have always had a reputation for enjoying gardening as a hobby. In Asian cultures, the garden became a place for quiet reflection. In America, the tradition of gardening grew with the population. Americans adapted many of the same practices brought to the country by immigrants from all over the world. Going beyond the mere cultivation of flowers and ornamental plants, most cultures have included a variety of decorative enhancements in their gardening schemes.

Pagodas and other types of shade shelters provide a space to sit, relax, and just enjoy the view. The addition of a walking path allows folks to stroll and admire the blooming of nature close up. Many species of plants are climbers. Varieties of ivies and other climbing plants take on a completely new dimension when made part of a decorative arbor. Arbors can be looked at as a gateway, a point of transition from part of a garden to another. Arbors can range from the simple to the ornate, either homemade or custom built. Arbors large and small are like a portal through which we walk while admiring the glory and diversity of nature.

Decorative accents such as planters and urns are a practical and beautiful addition to any garden. Planters and urns have an advantage over simply cultivating plants in the ground. Planter and urns, large and small, can be moved and rearranged, much like furniture. Like rearranging a room in your home, portable planters and urns allow the gardener to change the look and feel of that special place.

Many species of roses and other flowering plants love a chance to climb and thrive. A decorative trellis gives these plants just the right incentive to grow. Like flowering fans, a trellis can be cultivated using a variety of ornamental plants.

Garden benches of wood, stone, or wrought iron not offer more than just a place to sit and reflect. The design of a garden bench, like any piece of accent furniture, can enhance a landscaping theme. The same can be said for fountains and ponds, which are gaining in popularity. Once an expensive proposition, required lots of maintenance, garden ponds and fountains available from home improvement centers that are self contained and east to install.
